Defensive Handgun

Once you have achieved success with foundational shooting skills and have a basic understanding of the defensive mindset you will be ready for this course. The course is a fast paced evolution with one common objective, surviving a deadly force encounter when armed with a handgun. After a brief assessment, then we will run you through the gauntlet of defensive handgun skills designed to increase your time on target and performance. This is not an entry level course students are expected to have already mastered basic handgun skills, safety, and foundational shooting drills.

Duration: 1 day / 8 hours (4hrs classroom / 4hrs range)

Overview

  • Review of Threat Identification, Searching and Scanning and Tactical Communication
  • Dealing with Multiple Threats
  • Shooting While Moving
  • Non-Standard Shooting Positions / Seated Position Shooting
  • Utilization of Cover and Concealment
  • Shoot/No Shoot Drills

Estimated round count 400 rounds.

Prerequisite

We strongly recommend completion of the Intermediate Handgun Skills course or its equivalent prior to registering for this course. This is an intermediate level class.  The student needs to know and be able to demonstrate weapon familiarity, safe handgun handling, malfunction clearing, marksmanship while working from a holster.

Notes

Please wear long pants with pockets, closed toe shoes (no flip flops or sandals), and a crew neck (T-shirt) or button-up shirt (no low-cut neck lines), also a cap or hat with a brim. Bring water to stay hydrated during the range time.

You may bring your own handgun, holster, and mag pouch. Calibers allowed include .380, .38SPL, 9MM, .357SIG, .40S&W, and .45ACP. Revolver shooters should bring a minimum of 4 speed loaders, moon clips or speed strips

Equipment List:

  • Quality Functional Semi-Automatic Pistol
  • 3 magazines minimum, or 4 loading devices (speed loaders, moon clips or speed strips)
  • Modern double action revolver (6 Shooter)
  • Strong side Belt mounted holster and magazine carriers
  • Sturdy gun belt at least 1.5” wide (if it makes your handgun swing, you need to get a better one)
  • Clothing suitable for training in any weather including footwear.  Pants must have belt loops.
  • Wraparound eyewear, polycarbonate lenses or non-shattering prescription glasses
  • Earmuffs and earplugs
